It takes a special person indeed to put up with chasing me around the city to pick up my laptop. They delivered it back to me in Cherrybrook at the end of the day, all fixed! Thank you so much boys.

Are you a Google handyman?

February 26th, 2011

Are you the kind of person that loves to tackle home repairs with a spanner in one hand and a smartphone in the other?

I think even the nerdiest of self-professed computer repairs geeks of the world likes to think of himself as a bit of a Do-It-Yourselfer who can fix things around the house. It seems that basic home repairs is on that  list of ‘macho’ things society tells us a “real man” should be able to do.

Of course, letting your insecurities goad you into tackling a repair job you are not actually capable of completing is a recipe for disaster.(At least in the case of one Do It Yourselfer I happen to spend a lot of time with). In my book, a real man knows his limits; and this includes knowing when it is time to ask for help. I still remember the day when my Dad got up on the roof to fix a few broken tiles. Sitting inside as a kid, it sounded like this; “Woah”. Thud. Thump. Thump. Thump. “Shit”. A minute later Dad calmly walked in the side door, opened the cupboard and reached for the Yellow Pages. Having slid down the roof tiles, he knew it was time to swallow his pride and call in a professional rather than kill himself. It is a lesson that has stayed with me over the years…although I have added a personal customisation…I do not wait until I hurt myself before calling for help…maybe this is just a woman thing, though…

I still fancy myself as a bit of a ‘I think I can I know I can’ kind of person, but I always stop to weigh up the issues and whether I am out of my depth. As always, Google is your friend. On the weekend I fixed a leaking toilet and dripping tap (Yep! I did it myself!…never again!), having turned to Google for help and then consulted the guy at the local hardware store. It might not sound like much but, as someone who sits in front of a computer all day, I was quite pleased with myself. Admittedly, there were a few tense moments. Yes, I did end up wiping water off the ceiling at one point. But, I got the job done!

Whenever people run into computer issues, the first thing I suggest they do is Google the problem. These days I think you can apply that to just about any situation. So, are you a Google handyman?
