Banksia Historical Note:

A suburb of Southern Sydney Banksia is located 12 kilometers south of the Sydney Central Business District and is under the local government area of the City Of Rockdale which is part of the St George area.

Banksia was named after Joseph Banks a botanist who sailed with Captain James Cook

The suburb now sits on land once owned by brothers Simeon and James Pearce in the 1850’s, the area covered Rockdale to Brighton-Le-Sands. It was heavily timbered up until the late 19th century till residential development began in the 1880’s One of the leading developers was member of parliament Frederick Jamison Gibbes after whom Gibbes Street has been named. With the opening of the railway station – October 21 1906 the area started to develop more rapidly. Many names were chosen for the area but the final choice came from the father of novelist Christina Stead – Charles Stead. The post office opened in August 1924
