Campbelltown Historical Note:

Campbelltown is asouth-western suburb of Sydney. Campbelltown is located 51 kilometres south-west of the Sydney CBD.t

Nowadays, Campbelltown is a commercial centre and a central business district for South Western Sydney and the Macarthur region.

The name Campbelltown comes  from Elizabeth Campbell, who was the wife of former Governor of New South Wales, Lachlan Macquarie. Originally, the place was referred to as Campbell-Town, but later got simplified itto Cambelltown. the name was later simplified to the current Campbelltown.

The once lost herd of cattle was found by the Europeans in this area. The colonial administration was so keen for the herd to establish itself in the grassy plains that it  forbade killing of the cattle or settlement in the area. But John Macarthur, who wanted to establish sheep in the colony, decided that he wanted the prime grazing land for that purpose. So, he convinced the British government to overrule the local administration and grant him 5,000 acres (20 km2) in 1805. Development of the township in the area was slow at first, however, it later took off. Campbelltown's most famous incident occurred in  1826 when  local farmer Frederick Fisher disappeared. According to folklore, his ghostly apparition appeared sitting on a fence rail over a creek and pointed to a site where his body was later found to be buried. To commemorate this incident, the Fisher's Ghost festival is held each November in Campbelltown.
