Elizabeth Bay Historical Note:

Elizabeth Bay a harbour side suburb is located 3 kilometres east of the Sydney central business district; it is in the local government area of the City of Sydney.

The suburb takes its name from the bay (Elizabeth Bay) on Sydney harbour. Macleay Point separates Rushcutters Bay from Elizabeth Bay. The suburb is surrounded by Kings Cross, Potts Point, Port Jackson, Darling Point and Rushcutters Bay with Garden Island to the north.

Elizabeth Bay was named in honour of Elizabeth Macquarie – Governor Lachlan Macquarie’s wife. The area had been known originally by the aboriginal name Yarrandabby while Macleay Point was once known as Jerrewon

The Colonial secretary of New South Wales Alexander Macleay was granted 54 acres here in 1828 and he commissioned architect John Verge to build Elizabeth Bay House, construction on the Regency style house was completed in 1837
