Hurstville Historical Note:

Hurstville is a southern Sydney suburb located 16 kilometres south of the central business district. It is the administrative centre for the local government area of the City of Hurstville, and is part of the St George area.

Hurstville comes from the words *Hurst* which means wooded eminence and *Ville* meaning Town.

The first inhabitants of the area were part of the Eora Aboriginal tribe, their communities stretched along the Georges River from Botany Bay through to what we now know as Liverpool.

The first land grants were given in 1809. In 1850 Michael Gannon subdivided land into small farms, and the area became known as Gannons Forest. The post office opened in 1881 under the name Gannons Forest. The local school built in 1876 was named *Hurstville* by the school inspector. In 1884 when the railway station opened it took its name from the school. Hurstville Municipality was incorporated in 1887 and Hurstville was declared a city in 1988
