Lewisham Historical Note:

Lewisham is located 8 kilometres south west of the Sydney central business district; it is in the local government area of Marrickville Council, and is part of the inner west area of Sydney.

In 1834 Lewisham took its name from the estate of Joshua Frey Josephson a German born businessman. Joshua had named his estate after the London borough of Lewisham which means Leofsa’s village or manor. Joshua would later become Mayor of Sydney.

The area was originally home to the Cadigal clan of the Darug people.

Lewisham is notable in terms of railway history it was the termination point for the first train journey in 1855 and in 1885 a railway station was actually built there. In 1885-1886 the Whipple Truss Bridge was constructed over Long Cove Creek, it featured North American technology developed by Squire Whipple. It is probably the most significant railway bridge in New South Wales featuring four different types of bridges from different eras
