Lugarno Historical Note:

Lugarno is located 23 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district; it is part of the local government area of the City of Hurstville and is part of the St George area.

In 1843 Lugarno was named by surveyors William Govett and Major Sir Thomas Livingstone Mitchell, after Lake Lugano in Switzerland. For the suburbs name an R was added – Lugarno.

The whole area between Lugarno and Arncliffe was once heavily timbered. In 1841 convicts built Illawarra Road which ran through Gannon’s Forest down to the Georges River. The road from Arncliffe was later known as Gannon’s Forest Road, and today is known just as Forest Road.

In 1843 a punt operated from Lugarno to the other side of the river, with an established ferry service running from 1887 till 1974, closing due to the opening of Alfords Point Bridge. During the 1960’s land was released for housing and the area became a residential suburb.
