Marayong Historical Note:

Marayong is located 38 kilometres west of the Sydney central business district; it is in the local government area of the City of Blacktown and is a part of the Greater Western Sydney region.

Marayong is derived from the Aboriginal word *Marriang* which means place of cranes or emu. The name was first given by the New South Wales Railway in 1922 to the railway station when it opened in October of that same year.

In the early nineteen hundreds the area was subdivided with many poultry farms and market gardens being established. The area had been a part of Quakers Hill, but the Marayong Progress Association in 1926 applied to have Marayong made into a suburb in its own right.

Mostly rural until the 1960’s when housing commission estates were opened; this began the urbanisation of the suburb south of the railway line, with an industrial area opening to the north of the railway line.
