A geeky historical note on this suburb +

Mascot is located 7 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district; it is the administrative centre for the local government area of Bayside Council. Mascot contains Sydney Airport and sits on the North West side of Botany Bay.

In 1835 the first land grants were made in this area. The land was mostly used for Market gardens. In 1875 following the construction of Botany Road a subdivision followed and the municipality of North Botany was formed in 1888.

In 1904 a racecourse was in operation here on land that had been owned by the Australian Golf Club – the race course had been named ASCOT after the famous Ascot racecourse in England. Residents wanted the area to have its own identity and a referendum was held in 1911 to choose between Booralee, Mascot or Boronia.

In 1920 Mascot was chosen as the site for the first public airfield, with regular flights beginning in 1924.
