Moore Park Historical Note:

Moore Park is located 3 kilometres south east of the Sydney central business district and is part of the local government area of the City of Sydney.

Moore Park is both an area of parkland and a small suburb in its own right. It is part of the *Centennial Parklands* which is administered by the Centennial Park and Moore Park trust.

Named after the Mayor of Sydney Charles Moore. He fought for the land to be dedicated as an area for the people of Sydney. The land had been part of original 1,000 acres set aside for use in 1810 by Governor Lachlan Macquarie, to be used for watering stock and grazing.

In 1879 Sydney’s first zoo was established here on 7 acres of land known as Billygoat Swamp. The zoological gardens covered 15 acres and moved to Bradleys Head in 1917 – today it is known as Taronga Zoo.

It was home to the Sydney Royal Easter Show until 1998.
