North Bondi Historical Note:

North Bondi is located 7 kilometres east of the Sydney central business district; it is in the local government area of Waverly Council and is in the eastern suburbs area.

Bondi is an Aboriginal word meaning *water breaking over rocks*. The word has been spelt differently over the years including Bundi, Bundye and Boondi. The whole area was part of a 200 acre land grant to William Roberts a road builder in 1809. In 1851 the editor of the Sydney Monitor Edward Smith Hall bought the land for 200 pounds.

In 1892 the Ben Buckler Gun Battery was built with the intention of being able to protect the colony from any enemy vessels standing off the coast. The army evacuated the premises during the 1950’s and it was buried. In the mid 1990’s the site was excavated by Sydney Water Board for a new pipeline, and was reburied. The site is currently under Hugh Bamford Reserve
