North Turramurra Historical Note:

North Turramurra is located 20 kilometres north west of the Sydney central business district; it is in the local government area of Ku-ring-gai Council. Turramurra and South Turramurra are separate suburbs.

Turramurra is an Aboriginal word that means High Hill. Turramurra was adopted for the area in 1890 when the railway station was opened, prior to this the area was known as Eastern Road.

Turramurra was once an orchard area with several orchards along Bobbin Head Road.

In the 1920’s the area became home to the Sphinx War Memorial, a 1.5 meter high replica of the great Sphinx of Egypt. A returned soldier carved it out of sandstone as a tribute to fallen comrades.

The suburb is a great starting point for bushwalking with easy access to Cowan Creek, St Ives Chase and Bobbin Head.

Suburbs that surround Turramurra include North Wahroonga, Wahroonga, Turramurra, Pymble, Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, St Ives and St Ives Chase.
