Northbridge Historical Note:

Northbridge is located 7 kilometres north of the Sydney central business district; it is in the local government area of Willoughby, and is in the lower north shore area of Sydney.

The Northbridge area was home to the Cammeraygals tribe of Aborigines – it is after them the suburb of Cammeray has been named.

The suburb took its name from its location – it was to the north of a suspension bridge that was built in 1892. It cost 42,000 pounds to build and took a team of land developers it was originally known as North Sydney Bridge. It has been also known as Cammeray Suspension bridge, Northbridge and is now called the Long Gully Bridge.

The land where the bridge was built belonged to Arthur Twemlow who was a Sydney jeweller. Transport was a problem in the early days; he had to sail through The Spit, around Middle Head to Circular Quay, and then walked to his shop at Sydney Arcade
