Old Toongabbie Historical Note:

Old Toongabbie is located 29 kilometres west of the Sydney central business district; it is the local government area of the City of Parramatta and is a part of the greater western Sydney region.

Toongabbie is an Aboriginal word that means *meeting by the water* or *place by the water*. When Governor Arthur Phillip asked the local Aborigines what they called it, he named it Toongabbie in June 1792.

Old Toongabbie was the third settlement set up after the British arrived. In 1792 it was founded as a Government Farm area to grow food for the colony. After eleven years the farm was closed and given out as grants to convicts who had served their time.

In 1860 the railway was extended to Blacktown, but it took 20 years before there was a train station at Toongabbie. The school opened in 1886 and closed in 1911 due to low enrolments. The school reopened in 1912 and has been open since.
