Potts Hill

Potts Point Historical Note:

Potts Point is located 3 kilometres east of the Sydney central business district; it is in the local government area of the City of Sydney.

Potts point is a small densely populated inner city suburb that sits on a ridge immediately east of Woolloomooloo. To the north are Darlinghurst, Elizabeth Bay and Rushcutters Bay.

Kings Cross is a locality within the suburb of Potts Point, rather than a suburb in its own right. Garden Island which is a facility of the Royal Australian Navy sits at the north end of Potts Point.

Potts Point was named after Joseph Hyde Potts who worked for the Bank of New South Wales. He purchased 6 and a half acres of land in the area known as Woolloomooloo Hill, he renamed the area Potts Point.

Much of the area we today know as Potts Point including the adjacent suburb of Elizabeth Bay was owned by the New South Wales Colonial Secretary Alexander Macleay.
