Redfern Historical Note:

Redfern is located 3 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district; it is part of the local government area of the City of Sydney. Strawberry Hills is a locality that is on the border with Surry Hills. Redfern is an inner city suburb of Sydney.

The suburb has been named after surgeon William Redfern. In 1817 he was granted 100 acres of land in the area, where he built a country house on his property surrounded by flower and kitchen gardens. Sydney’s railway terminus was built in Cleveland Paddocks and extended from Cleveland Street to Devonshire Street and west into Chippendale. The stations name was chosen in honour of William Redfern, at that time the present Redfern Station was called Eveleigh. When Central station was built, Eveleigh station changed names to Redfern Station, and Eveleigh was used as the name for the railway workshops.

Suburbs surrounding Redfern include Chippendale, Darlington, Eveleigh, Central, Alexandria, Surry Hills, Moore Park and Waterloo
