Rosebery Historical Note:

Rosebery is located 6 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district; it is in the local government area of the City of Sydney. Roseberry is a south eastern Sydney suburb.

Rosebery was named after the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (1894-95) - Archibald Phillip Primrose, the fifth Earl of Rosebery. The area was given the name following his two month visit to Australia in 1883-84.

Rosebery was once the site of Rosebery Racecourse, which opened in 1906 as a pony track. Race meetings were held by the Associated Racing Clubs becoming as popular as the racing at Randwick racecourse, especially during the 1920’s. During World War Two the track became an army camp and after the war returned to a training track used by the Sydney Turf Club.

In 1961 a lot of the land was purchased and developed as an industrial area; the remaining land was purchased by the Housing Commission for high density public housing.
