Watsons bay

Watsons Bay is located 11 kilometres north east of the Sydney central business district; it is in the Municipality of Woollahra, and is in the Eastern Suburbs area of Sydney.

The original inhabitants of the area were the Cadigal people, also known as the Kutti

Watson’s Bay has been named after Robert Watson formerly of the HMS Sirius. In 1811 he was appointed harbourmaster and harbour pilot of the port of Sydney and was the first superintendant of Macquarie Lighthouse in 1816.

In 1793 Edward Laing received the first land grant in the area. Watsons Bay remained as an isolated fishing village until development started to begin during the 1860’s

In 1857 the Dunbar became shipwrecked against the cliffs below *The Gap* with the loss of 121 lives. The Dunbar had mistaken the bay of *The Gap* as the harbour entrance. Today *The Gap* is known as a notorious suicide spot with up to 50 deaths occurring there each year
